TSAI CHIN
3½x5½ image, shown as Suzie Wong, her first major stage role. A rare signature.
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Dear Dave/Good Luck/Tsai Chin". B/w, 3½x5½. Tsai Chin (b. 1936), also known by her Chinese name of Zhou Caiqin, the daughter of a famous Peking opera star, played Ingrid Bergman's adopted daughter in The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958). Her big break came with the starring role in the West End production of The World of Suzie Wong (1959-1961). Her song from the London production became a big hit in Asia, and she became a popular nightclub draw in Europe. She has appeared in two Bond films: You Only Live Twice and Casino Royale, and made five films opposite Christopher Lee as the daughter of Fu Manchu. In 1972, she gave a powerful performance as Wang Guangmei, wife of Mao's deposed rival Liu Shaoqi in The Subject of Struggle. (China's Cultural Revolution had claimed the lives of her own parents.) The first drama coached invited into China after the re-opening of the universities there in 1976, she has since served as a cultural bridge between China and the West, with many theatre visits to the PRC. When she played the title role in Madame Mao's Memories in London (1990), she said, "I was determined to be a good deal fairer in my representation of her than she ever was to my father." Tsai Chin reached a new audience with her critically acclaimed performance as Auntie Lindo in The Joy Luck Club (1993). Fine condition.
