(1944-2004), a left-handed reliever, played 20 Major League seasons (1965-1984),
the first 10 with the New York Mets and the other half with the Philadelphia
Phillies. He earned World Series rings with both teams, the '69
Mets (although he didn't pitch in that Series) and the '80 Phillies.
He was a key factor in the 1973 Mets' drive to a pennant, coining the slogan,
"Ya gotta believe." His best year was in 1972, when he posted an 11-4 record
with 27 saves and a 1.70 ERA. He also was credited with the victory in
the 1972 All-Star Game (one of his 2 All-Star selections), giving up only
one hit and striking out four in working the final two innings. McGraw retired
with 180 saves. McGraw died of brain cancer at the home of his son, country
music star Tim McGraw. Beaded ink.
