TULLY MARHSALL
An extremely rare signed photograph of the pioneering film and stage character actor
Photograph signed: "Tully Marshall", in black ink, B/w 8x10 affixed to cardstock. Affixed is an unsigned clipping detailing various credits from the actor. A pioneer of both stage and film performing, Tully Marshall (1864-1943) was a popular character actor with a nearly 60 year career. One of his first Broadway plays, Sheridan (1893) helped bring him to popularity, and he appeared in several Broadway play and Off Broadway plays afterwards. In the drama The City (1902), Marshall became the first actor to ever utter the word "Goddamn" on stage, though he had to have his back facing the audience as not to disturb them too much. His willing to push the boundaries helped make a successful transition to film, starting with Paid In Full (1914). He appeared in several prominent roles later in film, including the High Priest of Bel in Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916), Fagin in Oliver Twist (1916), and Jim Bridger in The Covered Wagon (1923). An actor until the end, Marshall's last film appearance was in Hitler's Madam in 1943, the year of his death. Corners worn and creased. Heavily toned. Image silvered around outer margin. Mounting residue on verso. Small tear on bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
