U THANT
United Nations brochure signed by the third Secretary General of the United Nations
Brochure signed: "U. Thant", 2p, 14x8½, front and verso, folded into fourths. "American Association for the United Nations" fold-out explaining "What it is...what it does...how it works", signed on the cover page. U Thant (1909-1974), Burma's permanent representative to the U.N. (1957-1961), served as the third Secretary General of the United Nations from 1961-1971. During his time as Secretary General, U Thant played a major diplomatic role during the Cuban crisis, helping facilitate negotiations between U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev. He was also notable for helping the entry of several African and Asian states, and for his opposition to apartheid in South Africa. Dying of lung cancer three years after retiring from his Secretary General position, his death was largely ignored by the Burmese government due to the president's hatred and jealousy of Thant. Originally intended to be buried in a regular cemetery, Thant's body was eventually taken by students and buried in the former grounds of Rangoon University, his graduating college, before being taken away by the government and finally laid to rest. Light surface creases and dents. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
