Signature: "U. Merbold, Mittl. Kirchhaldenweg 18/70195 Stuttgart, Germany" in black ink, 5¾x3. German physicist Ulf Merbold (b. 1941), who earned a PhD at the University of Stuttgart, flew two missions on the Spacelab - a modular laboratory developed by the ESA for missions on the U.S. space shuttle (1983, 1992) - and a third on Russian Space Station Mir (1994). He was the second German in space, the first to travel there on a US spacecraft, and a member of the first group to train in the European Space Agency Astronaut Corps. No longer an astronaut, Merbold still works for the ESA on microgravity projects. Lightly frayed at bottom edge. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
