Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair signed this typed letter on his personalized
letterhead in 1935, thanking the reader for his and his friend's kind comments.
Typed letter signed "U Sinclair". Pencil notation in bottom right corner. 1 page, 8½x5½ , on
Sinclair's personalized letterhead. Aug. 8, 1935.Addressed to Mr. Hans Schlomka, Oakland,
California. In full: "My dear Mr. Schlomka: Just a line to thank you for your very kind note,
and to ask you to convey to Dr. Camille Tyndall my appreciation of his message to you. It
indeed affords me heartfelt pleasure to read what he told you. Probably you have already read
'We, Peo-ple; in that case you might care to send the enclosed copy on to your relative.
Sincerely". American writer Sinclair (1878-1968) is best known for The Jungle, his 1906
novel exposing the horrors of the Chicago meat-packing industry. His other novels include
The Money Changers (1908), King Coal (1917) and Oil! (1927). Sinclair was also active in
politics, organizing the socialist EPIC (End Poverty in California) movement during the Great
Depression and running for as Democratic candidate for Governor of California in 1934. In
the 1940s, Sinclair wrote an 11-volume series about contemporary American character, "Lanny
Budd", who travels through time and meets historical figures; Dragon's Teeth(1942) won
the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Eight of his books have been adapted for film and TV,
including There Will Be Blood(2007), which was based on Oil!. Lightly toned and creased.
