Ursula von der Leyen (b. 1958), by training a physician, was
elected in 2003 to the Parliament of Lower Saxony, which her father had served
as Prime Minister (1976-1990). A member of the conservative Christian Democratic
Union, she was to Germany's national legislature, the Bundestag, in 2009, and
has served in the both Cabinets of Chancellor Angela Merkel: Federal
Minister of Family Affairs (2005-2009) and Federal Minister of Labour and Social
Affairs (since 2009). She has been closely associated with two issues:
promoting government funding of childcare centers and parental leave (opposed by
many conservatives in her own Party); and banning child pornography from the
internet. Fine condition.
