VAL FONTEYNE
Esteemed NHL player signs "Best Wishes Always" to a fan
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Wishes Always/ Val Fonteyne"
in black felt tip. 3x5. Val Fonteyne (b. 1933) is a retired NHL left
winger, who during his long career played for the Detroit Red Wings
(1959-1963, 1964-1967), the New York Rangers (1964-1965) and the
Pittsburgh Penguins (1967-1972). He also played in the World Hockey
Association for the Alberta Oilers (1972-1973) and later the Edmonton
Oilers (1973-1974). A strikingly unselfish player, Fonteyne undoubtedly
earned the respect of his teammates and is considered one of the cleanest
players in NHL history, only receiving 26 penalty minutes in his 820 games
played, and never getting a fighting penalty. Over his career he scored 75
goals with 154 assists, and played in the Stanley Cup finals with the Red
Wings in 1961, 1963, and 1966, although never winning. Fonteyne was
repeatedly offered scouting positions after his retirement, but no longer wished
to travel extensively. Corners rounded. Light toning. Fine
condition.
