Typed sentiment signed: "Yours sincerely/ Val Gielgud" in red ink. 2½x1 irregularly cut clipping affixed to 7½x5¼ page. Unidentified "R. Burns" signature affixed on verso merits further research. Val Gielgud (1900-1981) was an English actor, writer, director and broadcaster, best known as a pioneer of radio and television drama at the British Broadcasting Company. He took the position of the stations Head of Variety in 1929, responsible for all radio drama; Gielgud was also a prolific author, he turned out 26 mystery and detective novels, one mystery story collection, two historical novels and seven non-fiction books as well as 19 plays, and four screenplays. His real break came in 1930 when he was asked to oversee the experimental transmission of a short play on the new medium of television, starting with the play The Man With the Flower in His Mouth, which was chosen due to its confined setting, small cast of characters and short length of around half an hour. This would lead to a television career of more than a decade. Toned. Left edge frayed. Slightly soiled. Creased throughout. Mounting residue on verso of clipping. Otherwise, fine condition.
