VALENTINA "VAVA" CHAGALL
Marc Chagall's second wife signs a typed letter in French (1972).
Typed Letter signed: "V. Chagall", 1 page, 8¼x10½. St. Paul de
Vence (France), 1972 July 1. In French to "Madame Wiener,"
loosely translated in full: "Thank you for the very pretty flowers which
have given us great pleasure. I would have liked to see you but I am really not
too well. We spent several weeks in Paris and have returned very fatigued. We
are going to rest several weeks because we have a great need. I hope another
occasion will be given for us to see each other, and until that time we send our
best remembrances." Artist Marc Chagall's first wife, Bella, died in 1944.
In 1952 he remarried Valentina Brodsky, whom he called "Vava," his companion
until his death in 1985. As Chagall's widow Valentina continued to represent
him. She was honored guest at the opening of a Moscow exhibition of his
works in 1987, most of it not seen since he left the Soviet Union in 1922.
St. Paul de Vence, a medieval town in Provence, calls itself "the most
beautiful village in the world." Marc Chagall is buried in the local
cemetery. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
