VAN LINGLE MUNGO
3½x5½ image of the Brooklyn Dodger pitching ace remembered for the
song bearing his name
Photograph signed: "Van Lingle Mungo". B/w, 3½x5½. Van
Lingle Mungo (1911-1985), called simply Van by his teammates, pitched in
the Major Leagues from 1931 to 1945, the first 11 seasons with the Brooklyn
Dodgers. From 1932 to 1936, he was the mainstay of the Dodgers' staff,
winning 81 games in 5 years for a struggling team. Known for his hot
temper, Mungo was usually among the league leaders in both strikeouts and
walks, a scary combination for batters having to face him. Although he
made three All-Star teams, he may be best remembered today for the song "Van
Lingle Mungo," the lyrics of which are all ballplayers' names. When
songwriter David Frishberg met Mungo on the Dick Cavett Show in 1969,
Mungo asked (unsuccessfully) for payment for the use of his name. Ink skipped in
some areas, but legible. Corners lightly worn.
