The U.S. Senator signs his name on a letter to Barbara Norton, then head of the Public Relations department at the Sheraton-Park Hotel, sending her a photo found among his files.
Typed letter signed: "Vance Hartke", in blue ink, 1 page, 6¼x8. United States Senate. Washington, D.C. January 11, 1965. In full: "Dear Barbara: I found this picture among my files, and am sending it to you because I thought you might like to have it. Kindest regards. Sincerely". Vance Hartke (1919-2003) was a Senator for the state of Indiana, serving from 1959 to 1977. Before serving as Senator, Hartke was also the deputy prosecuting attorney of Vanderburgh County (1950-1951) and mayor of Evansville (1956-1958). As Senator, Hartke was a liberal Democrat, strongly opposing the Vietnam War, causing a falling out between him and Lyndon B. Johnson. He also supported public aid and equality, lobbying for medical aid programs and supporting the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Normal mailing folds. Staple on top left corner. Fine condition.
