VASILY PAVLOVICH AKSYONOV
Author Vasily Askyonov incorporated his English initials "VA"
into this signed, mustachioed self-caricature, drawn on a pink index
card.
Self-caricature signed "V. Aksyonov". 3x5 card, 2¼x2¼
caricature, one surface. The son of parents who spent almost two decades each in
Soviet prisons, Aksyonov (1932-2009) was a Russian author whose
anti-totalitarian views and independence earned him the disfavor of Soviet
authorities in the 1960s, culminating in his exile in 1980. His citizenship
was restored in 1990. Aksyonov's early novels, like Colleagues (1960),
A Ticket to the Stars (1961) and Oranges from Morocco (1963)
depicted characters attracted to the West but loyal to the the Soviet Union and
Communism. This changed later in the 1960s, when Aksyonov began injecting
bigger doses of fantasy, satire and parody into his writing. Excellent
examples from this era include Surplussed Barrelware (1968), The
Burn (1980), The Island of Crimea (1981), Say Cheese! (1985)
and Generations of Winter (1994). Fine condition.
