VAUGHN MONROE
Small 5x7 vintage publicity photograph of the musician wearing a
tuxedo.
Inscribed Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "To Bernard/Vaughn
Monroe". B/w, 5x7 overall, image 4x5. Captioned by Victor Bluebird Records,
including a list of song releases on verso. Vaughn Monroe (1911-1973), the
popular orchestra leader who was known for his boyish good looks and
engaging personality, got his big break at Meadowbrook in the spring of
1941. The singer and trumpet player got mixed reviews from critics, but was
a hit with the ladies. When the Big Band era drew to a close, Monroe's band,
which had focused on singing rather than instrumentals, continued in
popularity. Monroe was also a big hit on radio, well known for both his
singing and his Camel Cigarette commercials, and he continued to sing, both
on RCA Victor recordings and as the company's spokesperson, on RCA's television
commercials into the mid-1960s. Toned. Stains on right edge. Corners worn. Image
worn. Adhesive residue on verso. Pencil note in unknown hand on verso (no show
through).
