VELOZ AND YOLANDA: YOLANDA CASAZZA The dancing couple who appeared on Broadway signed this black and white photograph! Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Lester Meadows,/ Veloz and Yolanda/1937". Vintage b/w, 8x10. Signed by Yolanda. Francisco "Frank" Veloz (1906-1981) met YOLANDA CASAZZA (1908-1995) at a high school dance when they were teenagers. The couple won more than forty dance contests after teaching themselves how to ballroom dance. They were married in 1929, just a few years after they started to perform professionally. By the early 1930s, they became the most famous ballroom exhibition dancers in America, creating several new dances, including the Cobra Tango and the Veolanda. In 1932, they appeared in the Broadway musical Hot-Cha!, which ran for 119 performances. Film credits include Champagne Waltz (1937) Pride of the Yankees (1942), and Brazil (1944). The climactic dance of George Raft and Carole Lombard in Bolero (1934) is actually danced by Veloz and Yolanda. They earned an Oscar nomination for their performance in Cavalcade of the Dance (1943). Veloz and Yolanda opened a chain of dance studios in southern California and hosted a television dance show in the 1950s. Edges worn and creased. Slightly nicked at several places along left edge. Notes along bottom and on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
