VELOZ AND YOLANDA. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Peter/With best wishes/Veloz & Yolanda". Sepia, 8x10. Probably signed by Veloz. Francisco "Frank" Veloz (1906-1981) met Lolanda "Yolanda" Casazza (1908-1995) in a speakeasy circa 1921. The couple won more than forty dance contests and got married. They became the most famous ballroom exhibition dancers in America, creating several new dances, including the Cobra Tango and the Veolanda. They appeared in Broadway musicals and in several films, including Champagne Waltz (1937) Pride of the Yankees (1942) and Brazil (1944). The climactic dance of George Raft and Carole Lombard in Bolero (1934) is actually danced by Veloz and Yolanda. They were nominated for an Oscar for the Short Subject, Cavalcade of the Dance (1943). Veloz and Yolanda opened a chain of dance studios in southern California, and had a TV dance show in the 1950s. After they divorced, Veloz married another star dancer, Jean Phelps. Lightly soiled, mostly in margins. Two pinhead sized spots in top center background. 3½-inch glossy strip in lower margin. Overall, fine condition.
