VERA RALSTON. Photograph signed: "Vera Ralston". B/w, 10x8. Still from the 1949 film, The Fighting Kentuckian, which starred John Wayne as John Breen, Ralston as Fleurette De Marchand and Oliver Hardy as Willie Paine. Ironically, Wayne would be one of the few actors employed by Republic Studios who was indignant over the "star treatment" afforded to Ralston by studio head Herbert J. Yates, who first took the actress under his wing as his personal protégé before marrying her after his divorce from his wife became final. Actress Vera Ralston (1919-2003), born Vera Hruba in Prague Czechoslovakia, first gained attention as an ice-skater, prompting Yates to bring her to the U.S. to become "the next Sonja Henie". Credited as Vera Hruba in her 1941 film debut in Ice-Capades, the actress, who took the name "Ralston" from the name of a breakfast cereal company, would go on to appear in 26 films for Republic Pictures. She retired from the screen in 1958 - the year that Yates, whom she married in March 1952, was deposed as the head of the studio (the couple was married until his death on February 3, 1966). On June 16, 1973, seven years after her first husband's death, Ralston married Charles de Alva. The couple lived in Santa Barbara, California, where Ralston died on February 9, 2003. Fine condition.
