VICE ADMIRAL SIR CHARLES PAGET
His Parliamentary frank on an envelope addressed to the House of Commons
Free Frank signed: "Charles Paget", 7¼x3. Envelope front addressed in his hand: "Peterfield January fourteen 1820/to the [illegible] office/House of Commons". Free postal cancellation. Affixed at right edge is a biographic note (unknown hand). Sir Charles Paget (1778-1839) joined the Royal Navy in 1790, and by 1797 was in command of a war sloop. Paget had many naval successes in the long war against France, including the capture of several enemy vessels. He also gallantly rescued a French warship, foundering in a storm, at great risk to his own vessel. He also served in the War of 1812, seeing no combat in that conflict. Paget was a Liberal Member of Parliament (1804-1826, 1831-1835), but his naval duties precluded active participation in debates. Rising to the rank of Vice Admiral, he commanded the North America and West Indies Squadron from 1837, dying of yellow fever aboard ship. His brother was Henry Bayly Paget, made the Marquess of Anglesey for commanding the cavalry (and losing a leg) at the Battle of Waterloo. Charles Paget, an aide to both King George IV and William IV, held many honors, including Knight Grand Cross of the Royal. Toned. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
