Replying to his request for an autograph. In part: "Strange as it may
seem to you I haven't the faintest idea what your name is, hence the
abbreviation at the beginning of this note. You needn't feel badly because the
fault lies entirely with me." Captain Harley H. Christy had command of the
U.S.S. San Diego from August 19, 1917 to September 7, 1918; on July 19,
1918, it was struck by a mine and sunk. He then commanded the U.S.S.
Wyoming from September 19, 1918 to September 22, 1919. He was awarded
the Distinguished Service Medal for distinguished service while in command of
the U.S.S. San Diego engaged in important duty of transporting and
escorting troops and supplies to European ports during World War I and for
service while in command of the U.S.S. Wyoming in the Atlantic Fleet. The
battleship U.S.S. Wyoming had departed New York on February 1, 1919, and,
following winter maneuvers in Cuban waters, returned north, reaching New York on
April 14th. However, she stood out to sea soon thereafter, getting underway on
May 12, 1919 to serve as a link in the chain of ships stretching across the
Atlantic to guide the NC-boats on the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
Christy was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1924. Folds, 1 between "st" and 1
