In part: "Strange as it may seem to you I haven't the faintest idea what your name is, hence the abbreviation at the beginning of this note. You needn't feel badly because the fault lies entirely with me." Captain Harley H. Christy had command of the U.S.S. San Diego from August 19, 1917 to September 7, 1918; on July 19, 1918, it was struck by a mine and sunk. He then commanded the U.S.S. Wyoming from September 19, 1918 to September 22, 1919. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for distinguished service while in command of the U.S.S. San Diego engaged in important duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies to European ports during World War I and for service while in command of the U.S.S. Wyoming in the Atlantic Fleet. The battleship U.S.S. Wyoming had departed New York on February 1, 1919, and, following winter maneuvers in Cuban waters, returned north, reaching New York on April 14th. However, she stood out to sea soon thereafter, getting underway on May 12, 1919 to serve as a link in the chain of ships stretching across the Atlantic to guide the NC-boats on the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Christy was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1924. Folds, 1 between "st" and 1 touching "y" of Christy. Fine condition.
