Photograph signed: "Harry W. Hill/Vice Admiral U.S.N./Wakayama, Japan/Sept. 1945". As a Rear Admiral, Harry Hill commanded a battleship squadron in the fighting in the Solomon Island (1942), and planned the capture of Tarawa Atoll (1943), the first amphibious landing ever attempted on a heavily fortified enemy position. As Commander of the Fifth Amphibious Forces, he was preparing for the invasion of the Japanese home islands when Japan surrendered in September 1945, the month this photo was signed. In 1946, Hiill became the first Commandant of the National War College. Sepia, 5x6½ overall, image 4x5½ (one surface). Fine condition.
