Hirschfield (1902-1993) received the Navy Cross and a Purple Heart when the coast guard cutter he commanded, the Campbell, protecting a North Atlantic convoy in 1943, rammed and sank (after a gun battle) a German U-boat. Hirschfield, who also held a law degree from George Washington University, was retirement with the rank of Vice Admiral. Assistant Commandant of the US Coastal Service from 1954 until his 1962 retirement at the rank of Vice Admiral. His was one of only four Navy Crosses awarded to the Coast Guard during World War II. Creased. Worn at corners. Two faint diagonal scratches through center, not affecting signature. Chipped along right edge. Good condition.
