Commemorative Envelope Signed: “Richard H. Truly”, “Joe Engle”, and one unidentified signer. Envelope with black and white cachet honoring the STS-2 printed on left side. Postmarked November 13, 1981. U.S. Navy FPO, 96690. One United States C Stamp affixed. RICHARD H. TRULY (b.1937) was among the first military astronauts selected in 1965 and became a NASA astronaut in 1969. In 1983, he served as Commander of STS-8, successfully completing the first night launch and landing. Retired Vice Admiral Truly served as the eighth Administrator of NASA (1989-1992), which made him the first astronaut to fill the post. JOE ENGLE (b.1932) became a NASA astronaut in 1966, tested the X-15, flew the STS-2, STS-51-I and was a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Over the course of his career he flew more than 155 types of aircraft. Engle is the only human being to have flown two different types of winged vehicles in space (X-15 & Space Shuttle) and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001. Faint stain extends downward toward the right from the upper left-hand corner. Corners and edges gently worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
