"Dan Brandenstein," "Dale Gardner," and W. Thornton," 6½x3¾. 18¢
Space Shuttle and 3¢ Fort Bliss rocket launching stamps have been
affixed to the envelope which bears a scarce large pictorial postmark:
Space Station, Downey, Calif. 90241, August 30, 1983 launched, with the added
text: "the spacecraft for orbit ? it came from downey." In the early morning
hours of August 30, 1983, Challenger STS-8 was launched at the Kennedy Space
Center, the first nighttime launch of a manned spacecraft. Aboard were
five astronauts including Bluford, the first Black American in space.
