Autograph quotation signed: "S.C. Rowan/Vice Admiral" in black ink. 5x7¾. Washington, March 1886. On embossed letterhead with Rowan family motto (Cresco per Crucem) on top. In full: "'No contingency can occur in which our need be doubtful as to one's course, so long as reason will show us what is honourable and right.'" Stephen Clegg Rowan (1808-1890) was a Vice Admiral in the United States Navy. Appointed midshipman in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, he later took an active role in the Mexican-American War, serving as executive officer of the sloop Cyane during the capture of Monterey, California on 7 July 1846, and in the occupation of both San Diego and Los Angeles. During the Civil War, Rowan was captain of the steam sloop Pawnee. He attempted to relieve Fort Sumter and to burn the Norfolk Navy Yard, and in the fall of 1861 assisted in the capture of the forts at Hatteras Inlet. Taking command of a flotilla in the North Carolina sounds, he cooperated in the capture of Roanoke Island in February 1862. In 1870 Rowan reached the mandatory retirement age of 62 but was allowed to remain on active duty. His 63 year career was one of the longest in the history of the United States Navy. Lightly toned. Corners rounded and lightly creased. Normal mailing folds. Small bit of adhesive residue on verso. In notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
