On letterhead of the United States Senate, Committee on Rules, Charles Curtis Chairman and addressed to Hon. Harry S. New, Postmaster General, Washington, D.C. In full: "My dear Harry: I am handing you herewith a letter from my friend, R.A. Clymer of El Dorado, Kansas, inviting you to address The Kansas State Editorial Association at its annual session in Wichita on January 18 and 19, 1924. I hope you can give them one of those dates. I am very anxious indeed to have you visit Kansas and talk to some of our people. Trusting you will be able to accept this invitation, I am, with kindest regards, Very truly yours," CHARLES CURTIS (1860-1936), the grandson of a Kaw Indian, was a Congressman from Kansas (1893-1907) when he became U.S. Senator (1907-1913, 1915-1929). He was Republican Whip (1915-1924) and Majority Leader (1925-1929). In the Senate, he was the first to propose an Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution.He served as Hoover's Vice President (1929-1933) and, with Hoover, lost the 1932 election to FDR and John N. Garner. He could have signed this Senate pass while a Senator, or as Vice President, since the Vice President presides over the Senate. HARRY S. NEW (1858-1937, born in Indianapolis, Indiana) was a US Senator from Indiana from 1917 to 1923 and US Postmaster General from 1923 to 1929 appointed by President Warren Harding and continuing in office under Calvin Coolidge.
