At age 41, JAMES DANFORTH QUAYLE 3RD (born in 1947) was the third youngest U.S. Vice President when he was inaugurated on January 20, 1989; Buchanan's Vice President, John Breckinridge, was 36, and Eisenhower's Vice President, Richard Nixon, was 40. When the Bush-Quayle ticket was defeated in their 1992 bid for reelection, Quayle was the first Republican Vice Presidential candidate to fail to be reelected since Charles Curtis in 1932. Quayle, who had previously served as a U.S. Representative (1977-1981) and U.S. Senator (1981-1989) from Indiana, declared his candidacy for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination in January 1999, then dropped out of the race eight months later. On July 7, 1981, President Reagan nominated SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR (1930-2023), a Judge on the Arizona State Court of Appeals, was the first woman Justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court. Confirmed by the Senate 99-0, she was sworn in on September 25, 1981 and served until her retirement in 2006. Minor surface creases (not evident head on), one at the "e" of Quayle. Fine condition.
