DAN QUAYLE. Typed Letter Signed: "Dan" as Vice President-Elect, 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1989 January 3. In full: "Dear Pat: My heartiest congratulations on your re-election, and welcome back to the United States Senate. There are many challenges ahead as we begin the 101st Congress. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve in the U.S. Senate during the years past and I look forward to meeting these challenges with you in my new role as President of the Senate." Handwritten postscript: "Have a great year!" There was an interesting situation in the Senate on January 3, 1989, the day Quayle wrote this letter. President-Elect George Bush was still Vice President and President of the Senate and Dan Quayle resigned from his Senate seat that day so his appointed successor, Republican Dan Coates, could be sworn in with the other new Senators. Quayle could have waited until January 20th to resign from the Senate, the day of the Bush-Quayle inauguration. Quayle had served as U.S. Senator from Indiana since 1981. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford". Estate inventory numbers stamped in left margin. Staple holes in upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
