HENRY WILSON
He sends a letter to former Massachusetts Governor Briggs
Autograph Letter Signed: "Henry Wilson", 1p, 5¼x8. Natick, 1854 April 15. Two years after he was defeated for Congress and a year after he lost the race for Governor of Massachusetts, Wilson writes to Mrs. Goodwin. In full: "Your very kind note has been received and in reply I have to say that it will afford me great pleasure to accept your invitation to be present at your Festival and to say a few words. I have addressed a note to Gov. Briggs, but I have not received an answer to it." . Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was a Massachusetts shoemaker - hence his nickname, "the Natick Cobbler" - and an anti-slavery activist who entered the US Senate in 1855 with the Free Soil Party. In 1859 he was re-elected as a Republican, serving in the Senate until 1873, when he began his tenure as Vice President during Grant's second term. During the Civil War, Wilson raised and led a regiment of volunteers. Wilson died in office, in the Capitol building. GEORGE N. BRIGGS had been Governor of Massachusetts from 1844-1851. Lightly creased, horizontal fold touches the "W" in Wilson. Stained at upper horizontal fold, touching 1 letter. Otherwise, fine condition.
