Autograph Note signed: "Regret I can/not/H Wilson", 1 page,
2¾x5. Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was a Massachusetts shoemaker - hence his
nickname, "the Natick Cobbler" - and an anti-slavery activist who entered the
US Senate in 1855 with the Free Soil Party. In 1859 he was re-elected as a
Republican, serving in the Senate until 1873, when he began his tenure as
Vice President during Grant's second term. During the Civil War, Wilson
raised and led a regiment of volunteers. Wilson died in office, in the Capitol
building. Typed caption at lower margin. Irregular left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
