HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Posed image of the US Senator, Vice President and Presidential
candidate
Photograph signed: "H H Humphrey". B/w, 8x10. Attached to mount.
Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978) was Mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota before
his election to the U.S. Senate (1949-1964, 1971-1978). He gained
national prominence for his eloquent (and successful) speech in favor of a
strong civil rights plank in the 1948 Democratic platform triggered a walkout by
southern delegates. Nicknamed "the happy warrior" for his optimism and his
spirited defense of liberal causes, Humphrey served as Vice President under
Lyndon Johnson (1965-1969). Nominated for President in 1968 by a
Democratic National Convention bitterly divided over the Vietnam War, which as
LBJ's Vice President he had loyally defended, Humphrey lost the general
election to Richard Nixon by a narrow margin. Returned to the Senate, he
sought the Presidency again in 1976, losing the nomination to Jimmy Carter.
Learning that an AP poll of 1,000 Senate administrative assistants rated
Humphrey the most effective Senator of the past half century, Humphrey
responded, "Lyndon's not going to like that!" Lightly soiled. Corners lightly
worn and creased. Ink slightly smeared on signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
