HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Hubert H. Humphrey sends a typed letter of thanks for the help while
he was on a recent visit.
Typed Letter Signed: "Hubert H Humphrey" as Lyndon B.
Johnson's Vice President, 1p, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1968 January 15.
On "The Vice President" letterhead to Miss Naomi Huber, c/o American Embassy,
Monrovia, Liberia. In full: "I would like to thank you for the
assistance you rendered during my recent visit. Your efforts were important
to us and certainly helped to make the trip pleasant and fruitful and one that I
will fondly remember. With all best wishes, Sincerely". With original
typed mailing envelope bearing Humphrey's imprinted frank. In late December
1967-January 1968, Vice President Humphrey logged 22,600 miles in 11 days
visiting nine African capitals (he was the first Vice President to tour the
continent since 1961). In Liberia, Humphrey, accompanied by an entourage
that included his wife, Muriel, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall,
witnessed the sixth inaugural ceremony for Liberian President William V.S.
Tubman (Tubman and his wife would reciprocate with a visit to the U.S. in
March 1968). Humphrey would later investigate U.S. relations with Liberia as a
member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1975). In 1978, Congress
established the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, which would benefit
students from a number of countries, including Liberia. Hubert Horatio Humphrey
(1911-1978) was Mayor of Minneapolis (1945-1948), U.S. Senator from
Minnesota (1949-1964, 1971-1978; Senate Democratic Whip, 1961-1964)
and Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice President (1965-1969). Well-known for his
long and witty speeches on the Senate floor, he was known as "The Happy
Warrior". Humphrey, who ran unsuccessfully for President against Nixon in
1968, returned to the Senate in 1971. The post of Deputy President Pro
Tempore of the Senate was created for him. Humphrey held it from January 5,
1977 until his death at his home in Waverly, Minnesota on January 13, 1978. His
wife, Muriel, was appointed by the Governor of Minnesota to the U.S. Senate on
January 25, 1978 to fill the vacancy caused by his death, becoming the only Vice
President's wife to become a U.S. Senator. She served until a successor was
elected in November. Slightly creased with fold, mid-horizontal fold nicks the
upper portions of the "H" in Hubert and "h" of Humphrey. Fine
condition.
