HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Hubert H. Humphrey sends a typed letter while trying to seek the Democratic nomination for President for a second time.
Typed Letter signed: "Hubert H.", 6¼x8. On letterhead of U.S. Senate. Washington, D.C., 1976 March 22. To Mrs. Adolph Shirpser, San Francisco, California. In full: "Dear Clara, That was a wonderful article about you in the San Francisco Chronicle for February 5. I am so pleased that your involvement in politics is being made part of the record at the University of California. You are very much a part of the history you are helping to write and have earned one of the star roles. You have been so helpful to many of us and to the Democratic party as a whole. I salute you and thank you. My best wishes. When he wrote this letter, Humphrey was seeking the Democratic nomination for President for a second time, so he had every reason to court Democratic activists like Mrs. Shirpser. California would vote for its own Governor, "Jerry" Brown in the primary that year, however, while Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter would secure the Party's Presidential nomination. Mayor of Minneapolis (1945-1949), Humphrey was U.S. Senator from Minnesota from 1949-1964, when he was elected LBJ's Vice President. His cheerful advocacy of liberal causes earned him the nickname of "the happy warrior." He lost a very close race for the presidency to Nixon in 1968 and returned to the Senate in 1971, serving until his death in 1978. Slightly soiled. Fold crease not near signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
