HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Hubert H. Humphrey sends a typed letter of thanks for the copies of a
letter about the poultry inspection bill he introduced.
Typed Letter Signed: "Hubert H. Humphrey" as U.S.
Senator, 1p, 8x10½. U.S. Senate letterhead, 1957 April 24. To Mrs.
Margaret Worthington Gary, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very
much for sending me a copy of your letter of April 15 to Senator Douglas
concerning the poultry inspection bill I introduced. I am pleased to observe
that the opposition campaign against my bill has not been successful, and I am
ever grateful for an alert-minded public in spite of the intense misleading
propaganda. I am particularly appreciative of the kind of efforts you have made
to clear up misunderstanding about my bill. In the meantime I am sure you have
learned that the Senate has passed the Committee version of the poultry
inspection legislation and the bill is now in the House awaiting final action.
Enclosed is a copy of the new bill. S. 1747, the Committee Report, and my
Newsletter summarizing the new provisions and comparing them with those in my
original proposal [not present]. Again my thanks for your helpful
assistance, and all best wishes. Sincerely," Hubert Horatio Humphrey
(1911-1978) was Mayor of Minneapolis (1945-1948), U.S. Senator from
Minnesota (1949-1964, 1971-1978; Senate Democratic Whip, 1961-1964)
and Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice President (1965-1969). Well-known for his
long and witty speeches on the Senate floor, he was known as "The Happy
Warrior". Humphrey, who ran unsuccessfully for President against Nixon in
1968, returned to the Senate in 1971. The post of Deputy President Pro
Tempore of the Senate was created for him. Humphrey held it from January 5,
1977 until his death at his home in Waverly, Minnesota on January 13, 1978. His
wife, Muriel, was appointed by the Governor of Minnesota to the U.S. Senate on
January 25, 1978 to fill the vacancy caused by his death, becoming the only Vice
President's wife to become a U.S. Senator. She served until a successor was
elected in November. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
