HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Hubert H. Humphrey sends a typed letter trying to figure out the best way to complete a radio program.
Typed Letter Signed: "H.H. Humphrey" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1959 July 30. To George R. Sanders, Jr., Director, KPRL, Paso Robles, California. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter of July 16th, in which you asked about doing a series of radio programs with me. The idea sounds excellent. The problem is that I do not really know when I shall again be in California. Consequently it's impossible for me to plan a scheduled broadcast at this time. If you wish, however, I would be very happy to do a series of interviews by telephone. Or perhaps I can make some tape recordings which might be helpful. Let me know what you think about the matter. And thanks again for your kind offer. Best wishes. Sincerely," At the time, Senator Humphrey was considering a run for President in 1960. He entered the 1960 Democratic primaries but withdrew from the race when he lost in West Virginia to John F. Kennedy. Humphrey later served as LBJ's Vice President (1965-1969) and ran for President in 1968, losing to Richard Nixon. Hubert Horatio Humphrey (1911-1978) was Mayor of Minneapolis (1945-1948), U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1949-1964, 1971-1978; Senate Democratic Whip, 1961-1964) and Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice President (1965-1969). Well-known for his long and witty speeches on the Senate floor, he was known as "The Happy Warrior". Humphrey, who ran unsuccessfully for President against Nixon in 1968, returned to the Senate in 1971. The post of Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate was created for him. Humphrey held it from January 5, 1977 until his death at his home in Waverly, Minnesota on January 13, 1978. His wife, Muriel, was appointed by the Governor of Minnesota to the U.S. Senate on January 25, 1978 to fill the vacancy caused by his death, becoming the only Vice President's wife to become a U.S. Senator. She served until a successor was elected in November. File nicks at left. Lightly creased.
