Typed Letter
Signed: "Hubert H. Humphrey" as
U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1977
September 14. To Mr. E.P. McKean-Smith, Coquille, Oregon. In full:
"Just a note of thanks for your thoughtful and warm message. I hope that I
will continue to merit your trust and confidence. Again, my thanks for your
gracious letter." Humphrey served as Mayor of Minneapolis from 1945-1949,
when he became Senator from Minnesota (1949-1965). He was a candidate for the
Democratic nomination for President in 1952 and 1960. Humphrey, who served as
LBJ's Vice President from 1965-1969, was defeated by Nixon in the 1968
presidential election. Returning to the Senate, Humphrey served from
January 3, 1971 to his death from cancer on January 13, 1978, four months after
writing this letter. Lightly creased, horizontal fold touches descender in
"y". Two file nicks in blank left margin, light stain in bottom right margin.
