HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
As a busy U.N. delegate, he might not attend Norman Thomas' Disarmament Conference.
Typed Letter Signed: "Hubert H." as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. United States Senate, Washington, D.C., 1956 November 19. To Norman Thomas, Chairman, Post World War Council, New York. In full: "Just a note to acknowledge your letter of November 12. Dear friend, I can make no promise at all in connection with your Disarmament Conference at Arden House on December 14-17. You know that I am a delegate to the U.N. General Assembly, and you are undoubtedly aware of the agenda which the Assembly must complete prior to its adjournment. Up to now, we have been working all day and have been busy on into the night. Now I do want to come over, if at all possible, and visit at least one of your sessions, but it would be unwise, in view of my responsibilities to the Assembly, to attempt to attend all of your work sessions. As you know, Betty Goetz of the Disarmament Subcommittee, will be in attendance, and Mr. Valeo too, hopes to be with you." HUMPHREY, LBJ's Vice President from 1965-1969, served as U.S. Senator from Minnesota from 1949-1964 and 1971 to his death in 1978. THOMAS helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1920 and the League for Industrial Democracy in 1922. He ran for President as the Socialist candidate a record six times, 1928-1948, against Hoover, F.D. Roosevelt and Truman. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
