JOHN N. GARNER
John N. Garner signs an index card in black ink.
Signature: "Jno. N. Garner", 5x3 card. John Nance Garner
represented Texas in the House of Representatives from 1903-1933, when he
was sworn in as Franklin D. Roosevelt's first Vice President. The
FDR-Garner ticket was reelected in 1936, but at the July 15-18, 1940 Democratic
National Convention, the 71-year-old Vice President was dropped from the ticket
and replaced by 52-year-old Henry A. Wallace. He did not support FDR's bid for a
third term in 1940 and challenged him for the nomination, as did FDR's
Postmaster General and former Campaign Manager, James A. Farley. FDR was
re-nominated on the first ballot with 946 13/30 votes to Farley's 72 9/10 and
Garner's 61 votes. Garner died in 1967, 15 days before his 99th birthday,
surviving both Roosevelt and Wallace. Ink blotting on "o" and final "r", with minor
ink marks on other letters, else in fine condition.
