VICE PRESIDENT JOHN N. GARNER and MARIETTE GARNER
The Vice President and his wife sign a piece of pink cotton fabric.
Ephemera signed: "Jno. N. Garner", and "Mrs Jno. N. Garner", irregularly cut 4x2¾ piece of cotton fabric. "VP" added in another hand. JOHN N. GARNER (1886-1967), a U.S. Representative from Texas (1903-1933) and Speaker of the House (1931-1933), served as FDR's Vice President (1933-1941). A conservative Democrat opposed to many New Deal programs, Garner challenged Roosevelt for the Presidential nomination in 1940 and was dropped from the ticket. He once declared that the Vice Presidency was "not worth a bucket of warm piss." MARIETTE GARNER (1869-1948) married John in 1895 and served as his personal secretary during his years in Washington. When Mrs. Garner died in 1948, her husband donated their home in Uvalde, Texas to the town in her honor. It now houses the John Nance Garner museum. Slightly frayed at edges. Irregularly cut. Ink slightly haloed and doubled, but clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
