JOHN N. GARNER
John Garner sends a typed letter accepting a meeting to hear about a brief about the Economy Bill.
Typed Letter Signed: "John N. Garner" as Speaker of the House and Vice President-elect, 1p, 8x10½. The Speaker's Rooms, Washington, D.C., 1932 December 15. To Brice O. Taylor, Washington, D.C. In full: "Just received yours of the 14th, and I note what you have to say in reference to the Economy Bill. I assure you I will receive your brief at any time you may come to the Capitol. Sincerely yours," Five weeks earlier, FDR was elected to his first term as President. John Nance Garner represented Texas in the House of Representatives from 1903-1933, when he was sworn in as Franklin D. Roosevelt's first Vice President. The FDR-Garner ticket was reelected in 1936, but at the July 15-18, 1940 Democratic National Convention, the 71-year-old Vice President was dropped from the ticket and replaced by 52-year-old Henry A. Wallace. Garner died in 1967, 15 days before his 99th birthday, surviving both Roosevelt and Wallace. Lightly creased. Light paper clip stain at lower blank margin, glue remnant at upper left blank margin. Tack head-size ink smudge touches the last "r" of Garner.
