LEVI P. MORTON
Signature on a 4x2½ card
Signature: "Levi P. Morton", 4x2½ card. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1879, Morton (1824-1920) resigned to become Minister to France (1881-1885). In 1881 he drove the ceremonial rivet into the Statue of Liberty on the 100th anniversary of General Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, and in 1884 became the first American to climb to the top of the statue. Morton was Vice President under Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893) and then Governor of New York (1895-1897). A banker, Morton was a strong advocate of the gold standard, the leading issue of the 1890s. Stray ink marks at left margin. Mounting remnants on verso (no show-through). Overall, fine condition.
