NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
Nomination for the State Mediation Board.
Typewritten DS: "N.A. Rockefeller" as Governor of New York, 1p, 9½x16. State of New York, Executive Chamber, (Albany), 1962 January 11. To the Senate. In full: "I hereby nominate as a Member of the Board of Mediation Joseph F. Finnegan of New York City, who was heretofore appointed during the recess of the Senate and whose term of office is about to expire, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George Moskowitz." Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination in 1960.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Rockefeller died a billionaire, and yet "Rockefeller Republican" was a term used to describe liberal Republicans. Lightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Fine condition.
