NELSON ROCKEFELLER. Partly Printed DS: "N A Rockefeller" as Governor of New York, 1p, 9½x16. Albany, New York, 1962 February 12. On letterhead of State of New York, Executive Chamber "To the Senate". In full: "I hereby nominate as a Member of the Board of Visitors of Albion State Training School ARTHUR B. EDDY of Albion, to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of term of George E. Merry." Rockefeller was committed to providing higher education and learning opportunities to the citizens of his state. Under his leadership, the State University of New York became the largest system of public higher education in the U.S. Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979), the son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973, during which time he twice sought the Republican Presidential nomination (1964 and 1968). During WWII, he had served as Assistant Secretary of State. In 1974, Gerald Ford, who had assumed the presidency upon the resignation of Richard Nixon, appointed Rockefeller as his Vice President under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who served as Vice President until 1977, declined to seek the 1976 GOP nomination. At the time of his death, Rockefeller was worth approximately $1 billion. Stamped at upper left: "A message from the Governor was received and read in the words following"; stamped at upper right: "State of New York in Senate, Feb 12 1962". "Finance" stamped below receipt stamp. Stamped to right of name: "In Senate/Confirmed Feb 19 1962" and "Erwin". Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold nicks the lower portion of the "N" in Nelson and the "f" of Rockefeller. Lightly soiled at left margin, touching 2 lines of typed text (all legible). Ink check mark at upper right edge, stray ink marks at lower blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
