In full: "I hereby nominate as a Member of the Board of Visitors of
Wassaic State School WARREN J. SINSHEIMER of Scarsdale, to fill the vacancy
caused by the expiration of term of Mathew Manes." Rockefeller was
committed to providing higher education and learning opportunities to the
citizens of his state. Under his leadership, the State University of New York
became the largest system of public higher education in the U.S. Nelson
Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979), the son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was
Governor of New York from 1959-1973, during which time he twice sought
the Republican Presidential nomination (1964 and 1968). During WWII, he had
served as Assistant Secretary of State. In 1974, Gerald Ford, who had
assumed the presidency upon the resignation of Richard Nixon, appointed
Rockefeller as his Vice President under the provisions of the 25th
Amendment. Rockefeller, who served as Vice President until 1977, declined to
seek the 1976 GOP nomination. At the time of his death, Rockefeller was worth
approximately $1 billion. Stamped at upper left: "A message from the Governor
was received and read in the words following"; stamped at upper right: "State of
New York in Senate, Feb 21 1962". "Finance" stamped below receipt stamp. Stamped
to right of name: "In Senate/Confirmed Mar 12 1962" and "Cornell". Stamped at
lower left margin: "Said nomination was referred to the committee on finance."
Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold at the upper portion of the "N" in
Nelson and upper loops of the "R" and second "l" of Rockefeller. Lightly soiled
at lower margin, stray ink smudge at upper right edge. Staple impressions at
upper left blank corner, pencil erasures at upper left edge. Overall, fine
condition.
