Nelson Rockefeller sends a typed letter of thanks for the note and for the enjoyable evening.
Typed Letter signed: "Nelson" as Governor, 1p, 7x10½. Albany, New York, 1960 February 5. On official letterhead to Carl L. Shipley, Chairman, Republican State Committee for the District of Columbia. In full: "Your thoughtful note of the twenty-eighth with the attached letter is much appreciated. Mrs. Rockefeller and I enjoyed so much the evening with you and Mrs. Shipley. It was a wonderful occasion and I am indebted to you for the way you handled the various problems relating to its organization. My respect for your political acumen grew throughout the course of the evening and the opportunity of meeting so many of your friends and seeing so many old friends of mine was very much appreciated. With again any thanks to you both and best wishes, Sincerely". Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Lightly creased in blank upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
