NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
Nelson A. Rockefeller sends a typed letter of regret that he was not able to meet up with a friend.
Typed Letter Signed: "Nelson A. Rockefeller" as President of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, 1p, 8x10½. 20 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, 1957 March 18. To Karl Bendetsen, The Champion Paper and Fiber Company, Pasadena, Texas. In full: "This note is just to tell you how very sorry I was to have missed you at Arden House. Unfortunately, I had an engagement of long standing in Albany. We are tremendously grateful to you for making the trip up from Houston to talk to our group. In addition, I understand you were 'cornered' for advice way into the night and the next day. I hope that you will be able to come up for the security panel's next meeting and I look forward to seeing you then." On the letterhead, "Henry A. Kissinger" is listed as "Director of Special Studies". Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Yellow stain at name in salutation. Horizontal fold touches signature. File note (unknown hand) at upper right. Lightly creased.
