Albany, New York, 1960 April 28. On official letterhead to Carl L.
Shipley, Chairman, Republican State Committee for the District of Columbia,
Washington, D.C. In full: "Thanks for your note of April eight with
the column by Gould Lincoln of the Washington Star. It was nice to hear from you
and I am most appreciative of your thoughtfulness in my behalf. With best
wishes". Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D.
Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the
Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform
assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the
nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford
succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford
to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment.
Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from
1974-1977. Lightly creased at left edge.
