NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
Letter thanking a D.C. Republican leader for a story about President Taft and Governor Charles Evans Hughes
Typed Letter Signed: "Nelson" as Governor of New York, 1p, 7x10½. Executive Chamber, Albany, New York, 1960 June 23. To Carl L. Shipley, Chairman, The Republican State Committee, National Press Building, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for your very thoughtful note of the ninth, which is much appreciated. I also enjoyed seeing the story about President Taft and Governor Hughes." Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination in 1960.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Rockefeller died a billionaire, and yet "Rockefeller Republican" was a term used to describe liberal Republicans. President William Howard Taft had appointed New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes to the Supreme Court in 1910. In 1916, Hughes resigned to run for President. In 1921, former President Taft was appointed Chief Justice. When Taft retired in 1930, Hughes was appointed Chief Justice to succeed him. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper right corner. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
