NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER. TLS: "Nelson A Rockefeller" as Governor of New York, 1p, 7¼x10½. Albany, New York, 1965 August 9. On letterhead of State of New York, Executive Chamber to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter. I am most appreciative of your good wishes, and your thoughtfulness in writing. Sincerely". American politician, businessman and philanthropist Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979) was Governor of New York from 1959-1973, when he resigned to begin his quest for the 1976 Republican presidential nomination. Rockefeller had come to Albany facing a projected state budget deficit of $220 million. He also had to help New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner, a Democrat, with $135 million for his budget. Governor Rockefeller raised taxes and issued bonds, raising over $6 billion for New York state. The state debt during his administration rose from $1 billion to $13 billion, allowing the Governor to engage in a massive building and spending program and leading opponents to claim Rockefeller had an "edifice complex". When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as Vice President from 1974-1977. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
