Albany, New York, 1961 October 11. On official letterhead to Carl L.
Shipley, Chairman, Republican State Committee for the District of Columbia,
Washington, D.C. In full: "Many thanks for your letter of October
third. It was a great pleasure to have you at the cocktail party. Thanks, too,
for the suggestions in respect to hats and contacts with our Republican
Congressmen. They are all to the good and I will keep them in mind. With best
regards, Sincerely". Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John
D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought
the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured
Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the
nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford
succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford
to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment.
Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from
1974-1977. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
