NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
The Governor of New York declines an invitation from his youngest brother to attend a dinner in honor of Willard C. Butcher.
Typed Letter signed: "Nelson" as Governor of New York, 1 page, 7¼x10½. Albany, New York, 1972 December 6. On letterhead of the State of New York, Executive Chamber addressed to Mr. David Rockefeller, 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza, New York, New York. In full: "Dear David: I'm terribly sorry I won't be able to attend the dinner in honor of Willard C. Butcher. From now on - for three or four months -- I'll be in Albany on Monday and Tuesday of each week. But thanks for thinking of me. Sincerely," Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as Vice President from 1974-1977. David Rockefeller, Sr. (b. 1915), the last surviving grandson of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller and the youngest of 6 prominent siblings who included U.S. Vice President and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, was CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank from 1961 to 1980. Normal mailing folds. Slightly creased. Lightly toned at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
