The Governor of New York declines an invitation from his youngest
brother to attend a dinner in honor of Willard C. Butcher.
Typed Letter signed: "Nelson" as Governor of New York,
1 page, 7¼x10½. Albany, New York, 1972 December 6. On letterhead of the
State of New York, Executive Chamber addressed to Mr. David Rockefeller, 1 Chase
Manhattan Plaza, New York, New York. In full: "Dear David: I'm
terribly sorry I won't be able to attend the dinner in honor of Willard C.
Butcher. From now on - for three or four months -- I'll be in Albany on Monday
and Tuesday of each week. But thanks for thinking of me. Sincerely," Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D.
Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the
Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform
assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the
nomination that year.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford
succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford
to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment.
Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as Vice President
from 1974-1977. David Rockefeller, Sr.
(b. 1915), the last surviving grandson of Standard Oil founder John D.
Rockefeller and the youngest of 6 prominent siblings who included U.S. Vice
President and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, was CEO of Chase
Manhattan Bank from 1961 to 1980. Normal
